Norma was our first production in which all elements were designed and drafted on the computer using three-dimensional modelling software. After experimenting with this technique for Madama Butterfly during the previous season we refined our techniques to be able to successfully simulate materials such as scrim and intricate cutout detail. Working closely with stage director Kay Castaldo co-designers Boyd Ostroff and Kevin Baratier were able to finalize the designs rapidly in order to meet a very tight production schedule. The software also allowed us to experiement with a variety of lighting, projection and atmospheric effects.

The computer models were created using Strata StudioPro version 2.1 on a Power Macintosh 7300/200 with 160MB of RAM.
