TALES OF HOFFMANN

Stage Director: Kay Walker Castaldo

Scenery by Boyd Ostroff

Preliminary Designs

Version 3: 8/1/98

Designer's Note:

After attempting a complete re-design of the set in version 2, we decided to return to something similar to the original idea. One of the problems with the first version of the design was that the "turntable" approach limited the playing space and did not provide enough variety in the different scenes. We decided to keep the idea of a multi-leveled set, however we would mount each unit on swivel casters so it could be positioned as desired anywhere on the stage. Another change involved the construction of the set, which had been steel pipes in version 1. In version 3 we changed to wood construction (largely for budgetary reasons), however the set would be painted to give a steel "industrial" look. Some platforms and stairs were also removed from the design in order to keep costs in line.
